1979 VIKING
1979 VIKING
My dad and me found this Vking sitting behind a tire shop, was told its an old race boat that has been sitting in the elements for quit sometime because the floor, core and transome seem to be gone, sometime in its life its had work done to it six stringer setup center steer. We decided to take a look at the core, all that was left of the floor was just fiberglas so pulling it up was no problem, I made a hole in the core glass and pulled it up also, there was no balsa to be found, someone used plywood for the core material which was so rotten I can just sweep it up, the transome is just as rotten.

Re: 1979 VIKING
That may have started life as a comp model, the 6 stringers is a indication of that. There were many varieties of comp models from flyweight boats to heavier more durable marathon models. It's defiantly worth the effort to restore it.

Re: 1979 VIKING
I would say its a comp model with a small floor. You can tell by the 6 stringers in it and plus the center steer. Awesome project for sure. Well worth restoring.
Does it look like the helm was ever attached in the bigger hole on the right side? If not then thats could be a factory center steer indicating a comp model as well. I dont thing any non comp models were sold with center steer. I could be wrong here though but I dont recall any.

Re: 1979 VIKING
Hippie I cant tell that the helm was mounted in the right hole, also it has the old kifenhaufer (or however you spell it) opposed steering in it. Does anyone one have new or used cables for it?

Re: 1979 VIKING
Im sure you would be able to tell if it was mounted there or not. Im guessing from the pics it was never mounted there or someone did a good job of repairing it from it being there.
Keep the pics coming for sure. Awesome boat. I would love to have it myself.

Re: 1979 VIKING
Well we made some progress today, we removed the top and started cleaning out the rest of the old stringers and the old core, We made some discoveries on the hull, the previous work done on the boat wasnt good, they must have used a skil saw and had the blade set to deep because we found four spots cut through the hull along with other repaired spots. Ill have picture tomorrow I forgot to bring my camera. Hippie i checked the big hole on the right and there was no repair work or proof the helm was ever there, also there was no running lights or windshield ever installed. Comp ???
