Varmint transom ideas

Looks like I’m going to do the transom along with the re-core. Does anybody have any pics of where they cut the splash well out to do it? I’ve got an idea on how I want to do it, just want to do my research before I do it. Thanks!!!!

Assuming that you want to save the spashwell, and are not removing the rubrail and splitting the deck.

This is how Hippie did his. He cut out the entire splashwell since he'll be decking it over.


You'll want to cut near the transom in a similar fashion, but you will need to cut away 4-5 inches of the well so you can get clamps on for the new transom.

If you are splitting the deck, keep in mind you'll need to remove the rubrail (and it will then be garbage), then doing the transom will be easier. (But harder in the long run as you'll have a deck to reattach securely.)
I split the deck on my Viper because I like space to work.

Nice thread. I am hoping to keep the splash well and cut as little of it as possible. Do I just glass over the area of missing rub rail?

Yes you would. However the cocoloco finish will be ruined where you lay in new glass/resin.
Once the new transom is installed, it will need to be glassed over the top edge and over the back (motor side) - this means to get a good bond with the new glass, the gelcoat will need to be sanded off until bare glass remains. This also means that it will need to be painted/or gelcoated after - if you don't mind having a transom gelcoated in a different color.
Or you spend the big bucks to get it professionally gelcoated to match the original cocoloco metalflake.

Please provide pictures of your boat, especially the transom and splashwell. That'll help us get an idea of what you'll need to do to save as much original gel as you can.

I’ll get some pics posted. The original gel is probably done anyways, I figured I’ll paint the whole boat at some point. The transom is actually pretty solid, it’s just had several different engines installed, and left several holes in it.

The first rule of the forums is that we never ever describe a transom / core / hull as "solid". Only after its been replaced.

I really need to tell Hippie he needs to make that an actual rule.

Ok well if you're gonna paint it, then have at'er.

If everything needs to be replaced, personally I would recommend splitting the hull. Grinding under the bow is a real dirty chore. Ask Hippie.

Oh yeah, core and floor are shot. I’m in the process of cutting all of that out.

Yeah, there are two types of hydrostreams, ones that need new core, floor, stringers, and transom, and ones that have had it all replaced already. If a hydrostream is original, its rotten. But dont let that discourage you what so ever cause think of it this way, once its all replaced, and replaced right, that boat will last another 30+ years easy for a fraction of the cost of a brand new boat and you will be way cooler still.

After I got the majority of the floor out of it, it all made sense after all of the reading I did. It will be as good as new when I get done with it, just a slow process is all.
