VultureNo2 wrote:Rick - The picture of your core in but not glassed over really helps. Questions. Are those the original stringers? is the core on the left and right different that what's in the middle underneath the stringers? Are those the new stringers already glassed back in on top of core that is the same foam as on the sides? Also, I see the lines in the foam. It is foam right? Are those all separate strips of foam or one solid piece? Did you start with a large sheet of foam and cut it, or was it already in smaller strips? The stuff I was looking at was 4 feet by 4 feet. Just cut it even and but it up against the next piece? Thanks for the advise on setting the boat of the trailer. Are you saying a 2x8 flat on the ground and 2x4's standing upright screwed to the 2x8 as the base? Bill
Correct on the 2x8. Like an upside down channel. The core is sliced so it can conform to whatever it's being bonded to. It's held together on the back side with a thin cloth. The core between the stringers is just cloth side up. The stringers are new. I bonded them to the hull with thickened resin and also layed the core between the with a real tight fit. I bonded the core with thickend resin also. I used a closed cell foam for the core. I came in pretty big sheets, cant really remember the dimentions. There's a lot of different opinions on foam but I was talked into it buy a guy in the business. Foam is a bit more expensive than bulsa though. I'm also going to send you another pdf file from core bond. I used thickened resin and not there product because its basically the same thing. Anyways, it good reading on stuff like this. I'll be around
Rick.

Thanks Rick and Hippie. All excellent advise. Working on somewhere to work other then my garage. Might have a place. I have a brother in law that works on glassing sailboats. Lately he has been getting into vacuum packed stuff and has all the equipment. Also thought he could get a deal on some new balsa that someone he knows has. Haven't decided which way I'll go. This might slow me down a little but if I can get it somewhere where we can crank out the work instead of a couple hours at a time, it would be better. Said he's already buying five gallon pails and has a couple in his garage and plenty of cloth. Sounds like a start. Won't tear into the stringers until I can get the boat where it will be worked on. I will take a core sample early next week, and make some decisions. already read the restore link you sent me
Rick, and it was excellent. Bill
