wiring help
thought id run this by the forum before i started to try and figure this out on my own. might save me some time..
i wired the boat with a merc harness and a new sierra ignition switch. the ignigition switch has 6 wires. im also using a sierra kill switch. everything works fine but when i turn the key off to kill motor the motor keeps running. the kill switch will kill it. all gauges working properly ( power up when key is turned to "on" position)
i wired everything straight up color for color. the kill wire (black/yellow) is wired "in"kill switch "out" to seperate ground.
seems the motor isnt geting kill signal to stop when key is turned off?????
is it a problem with how i have the (-)grounds wired???
black (-) ground coming out of key is wired directly to harness (-) ground
any help appreciated

Re: wiring help
What happens when you are running and you trip the kill switch? If the motor keeps running, I would say that you have somehow wired it 'parallel' instead of in 'series'. Best of luck.

Re: wiring help
Do the gauges power down when you turn the key off?
If they do, that's the same terminal that should power the ignition, assuming you have the 'hot wire' going into the proper terminal.
I'm sorry, I don't know what color wires go where. I would use an ohm meter to locate the proper terminal.

Re: wiring help
Yeah gauges power down, wired them on the purple wire.
Theres a constant 12v (red) that I wired directly to red on harness.
I feel like it's something to do with how I have the ground but I can't put my finger on it.

Re: wiring help
The factory switch grounds the "kill" circuit when it's off. This feature won't be on an aftermarket "universal" switch.

Re: wiring help
Having the 2 grounds parallel is what you would need. Ground your ignition switch, then splice the kill switch into the ignition wire (the one that when grounded kills the motor) before the switch (assuming kill switch is normally open) that will give you 2 grounds on the circuit. The reason it doesn't work now is because you're in series, and with the kill switch normally open the key switch doesn't actually have a ground.

Re: wiring help
Got it figured out today. I had it right. Kill switch grounded seperate. The missing link was a black with green stripe wire coming from the key swtch. I jumped it in front of the kill swtch. My guess is when the key is turned to off position, a ground circuit is closed through the key out the black and green wire. Everything works as intended now and I can save the integrity of the kill switch.
Thanks for the help guys
