A couple inches on each half is sufficient.

This is the best I can describe it....on my 76 Viper, I split the hull and deck. Now, on the upper part of the inside of the hull, the hull is covered in black. Does not look like gel, was it paint? I am grinding the lips right now that bond the hull and deck together. How far down on the hull from this lip do I have to grind for the new epoxy and glass to adhere to the hull when bonding the hull and deck back together again?
