'90 Vassarette w/ XP150 - top speed?

Post: # 18181Post Kleck »

I have a 1990 Vassarrette with an Evinrude XP150 that tops out around 50mph on GPS. Seems a tad slow based on what I see others getting. Although I am running an aluminum 19 prop now (great hole shot). Had a 24 Raker on it originally, and didn't seem to run any faster with that and the hole shot and getting on plane sucked. Blades on it might need some work though which may have affected it.

Not sure where my RPMs are since my tach doesn't always work. Regulator/Rectifier issues? It works, then doesn't, then might work again, but never stays working.

Anyone else have a similar setup and what sort of speeds are you getting?

Thinking I may have some engine work to do or checkout. I'm going to change the plugs and clean the carbs. Anything else worth digging into?

Thanks

While you have the plugs out its nothing to check compression....

yeah as idvette said check compression to see if motor is tired or not, then fix tach hard to get performance gains when you dont know what your revving...i would think you should run alot better with a 24 raker then aluminum 19....besides holeshot of course. my ol' gt 200 loved a 28 raker....but if your boat is waterlogged and motor tired 24 would be difficult....a 22 or 21 pitch would probably be best all around

Welcome, fifty mph with a 19 is about right, but, as said above, you have a lot of possibilities as to why the 24 isn't working. The tach is essential, so get that worked out, ( rectifier, connections or the tach itself).

Where is your motor in relation to the transom? You might be too deep for the raker. As a very general rule Streams like choppers.

Thanks for the tips guys. This is my first boat so I know there are a lot of things I need to learn yet. Like proper trim/engine tilt.

When the engine is all the way down it's about 4" below the lowest part of the transom (after the step down, where the drain plug is). I do not have a jack plate either. Seeing pics of others at higher speeds I'm thinking I need to tilt the engine up more to get the hull out of the water. I'm probably riding too low which would cause a lot of drag.

Hopefully later this month I'll get the boat outside so I can hook up the water to it and get it running. As I do that I'll check the compression and change the plugs. And test the tach! I'll look into decarboning the motor too. Thanks!

Try to get the prop shaft even with the bottom of the pad. If your not running a nose cone with a low water pick up, keep an eye on your water pressure. And by doing that raise the entire motor on the transom, not with trim. If you try that route you could get yourself in a lot of trouble.

So I should move the prop shaft (red line) up so it's more in line with the bottom of the boat (yellow line)? Is that what jack plates help do?

FYI, this will work better for posting images in posts then using images from your album - http://www.hydrostreamforums.com/howto-images

I fixed your pic there for you.
