Supply list

Post: # 23089Post DavidB »

I’d like to get an opinion on supplies

This is what I think I need to buy just want to get a few opinions to make sure I’m buying the correct stuff

No marine plywood on there because I’ll be getting that from my local lumber store here in Michigan

Well, I can tell you, I used every bit of 15 gallons of resin on my vulture. As for other supplies, lots of measurements and add close to double. That's what I did. As for bulsa, I'm going to say 5-6 sheets. I would call Mertons or Express Composites (they know about us here and lots of guys here, including myself, have used them) and tell them what you're doing and they will get you more than taken care of. And both of them will ship where ever you want.

What Hippie said...you'll need more. I've already used 3 gallons of resin just to add a single layer of 1.5oz chopped strand mat to the entire hull section of my 15'ft Viper. I bought 20 yards of 50" wide mat and more than half was used so far.

10 yards = 30 ft. And since you're only getting the 38" wide stuff, you'll run out before you even cover the bottom of your hull completely. Valero has an 89" beam - your CSM cut in half and laid side-by-side is only 76" wide and 15 feet long.
You'll need extra for your stringers. You'll need extra layers on your transom. You'll need extra to glass both sides of your floor (if you're putting a new one back in)
In my opinion you should get at least 25 yards of mat, but don't be surprised if you need more.

Nobody said this hobby was cheap....people scoff when they hear a rebuild job is $3000+. "Oh I can do it for so much cheaper!" But then they're $1500 in for their own supplies, not to mention the 100+ hours they'll put in actually working on their boat...then you realize the guys charging $3000 for a core and transom job aren't really making a lot of profit on it.

You might be able to save on ORTHO resin instead of ISO. I pay $150.00 a 5 gal pail of ortho fiberlay laminating resin in Alaska
