quick response appreciated
hi, have found some power for my viper, its a 2.5 150 merc, dont know the year model, but its on a viking. motor has a 15" mid, was cutdown. has a bobs lwp, hotfoot, pretty much everything i need for my viper, and the guy is willing to put it in the water tommorow and take some test rides. should i have any concerns about the foot, midsection being cutdown? and is there anything else i should look for. boat also has a new sound system, 4 6x9s and a 10" sub. rediculously low asking price of 3800. that scares me. seems too cheap, but im gonna make the 2 hour ride tommorow to check it out, so tell me what i need to look for guys. thanks

the boat seems like it has everything i need. 11 gallon aluminum gas tank, duel batteries, electric fuel pump, 15" mid, lwp, manual jackplate, 150 2.5, on a 1983 viking, seems like a really good deal, im making the drive tommorow, if it runs out good, it will be following me home, just wondering about that mid being cutdown, and how well it was done. also has new cd player, 10" sub and 4 speakers.

The 2.5 150's have a thick sleeve so that the actual displacement is still a 2.0 liter.
The cut mid can be a concern if it's a bass mid. The off shore mids are a lot thicker and can be welded by someone that knows what they are doing. Marty Powell is the only guy that I have heard of that has done the bass mids with success but I would watch it.
As for the boat, you know the deal go into it assuming it needs a core if it doesn't your ahead of the game.

chet im just more or less buying the boat for the power, think im still gonna stick with the 84 viper. hate to sound like an idiot, but how can i distinguish the offshore mid from a bass mid? one will have a ridge on the backside and the other wont? am i correct in this?

Here is what an off shore merc mid would look like. Notice the exhaust comes out at the bottom rear of the mid and not at the prop.
And here is an OMC off shore mid
As for the bass mids, I cant say what to really look for as I am still new at learning about these outboards myself.

I'd be leary of a cut down bass mid regardless of who cut it. Marty does awesome work but i would have to see how the process is done on a basser before I would even consider hanging one on my boat.....'specially if I had some horsepower sitting on it. As Kevin referenced above......an older model ridgeback offshore....
And a standard bass mid.....

Jeff, your garage is way too clean. But then again so is your boat.

Re: quick response appreciated
I've seen some cut down mids in recent years that I wouldn't put on a rowboat.
This is a cut down offshore, it's a very high quality piece made by a crazy person from Long Island. (Pretty amazing that someone would stake thier life on work done by a crazy person )
