my boss just bought a '78 vector

Post: # 16244Post brian1570 »

as the title states my boss just picked up a MINT '78 vector with an equally MINT 2.0 merc black max. boat was fully restored back in '08, but looks like it was done yesterday. i'll get some pics and vids of it soon. we do have a small problem though, we think we might have the wrong prop for what we want to do with it. when trying to come up on plane just before it breaks over the prop loses "bite", and the rpm's shoot through the roof. with one person in the boat you can pedal it, kinda like trying to get a race car to hook on a **** track. but with all 3 of us in it, it takes an act of congress to plane it out. once it does get out of the hole the thing flies. i think we hit 60 just toolin' around. anyways it's got a 24p 3 blade prop with not much cup to it. the previous owner claims 74 mph with that specific prop. the top speed recall on the speedo shows 102-ish. our theory is that there isn't enough cup on the prop, and/or it needs a jack plate to move it back about 5-6 inches. and he does have a jack plate that should work, so would it be a good idea to try it?

Gotcha, got an aunt living in clear lake now.

Theres alot of info on hydrostream.org on vector setup directly on trans. This info had some supporters and non supporters. I can't tell you yea our nea with no experience for myself. I do know alot of vector guys like 5 in setback, prop shaft some where around even with pad. ( with a nose cone)

I'm running 2.5 in setback even with pad with good results but not enough run time to validate a suggestion.

One thing to do is change your technique. Just stand on the gas until it catches, don't try to pedal it, because that really doesn't help. Within a couple seconds, the prop should bite, if not, the prop's gotta go. I'm not a fan of through hub props on these boats anyway. And you are correct, the boat will probably benefit from some setback.

Most people in your situation will carry 2 props, one for carrying a load, another for top end. Propellers act a lot like gearing in cars, so you need less pitch for a stump puller, and more for your top speed (light load) stuff. With a 24, you should be able to carry as many fat girls as you want

Welcome, that's a great looking Stream. I'm always glad to see a nice Hydrostream in Texas.

Pete is correct, as always 8-) . If you know someone with an over the hub chopper, maybe a 24 pitch, borrow it. It may not be the perfect screw, but I'll bet you'll like it a lot better. :boating:

we already have a 24 solid hub chopper, used it today. it hauled ***. started to porpoise and walk a little though. i think the solo run was 62 mph or so. and it left fairly well with the 3 of us. so it leaves now, just gotta figure out the porpoising issue now.
