restoring a Ventura II

Post: # 17878Post nosboss »

I'm finally ready to start a build thread for my Ventura II. This is a work in progress so bear with me on the slow updates. This hull started life with me as a bare hull with only bow and stern lights installed. Luckily for me it was put to rest before the bottom delaminated. It will get the core completely removed and get a stringer life from here on out. No core will go back into this hull. I will add several layers of resin/mat to the bottom and that along with stringers will give it more than enough strength.

Here is what it looked like when I got it. We put it in the water to do a trailer swap. I picked it up with my roller trailer and we're putting it on a bunk trailer where it will live from here on out. :boating:

This is what I found when I pulled a small layer of fiberglass up near the rear of the hull. A mix of rotten balsa and some polywood that didnt look near as old. lol

Here I cut out the splashwell and started transom removal. Having not cut a well out before, I didn't realize that there was a support on the outside edges of it. No biggie, I will rebuild that part when I rebuild it flat. The transom was rotten all the way through just like I expected.

Floor and core removal time. Luckily the core was completely rotten in this hull, well, all but two small sections that didn't amount to much more than a square foot. They were removed with an oscillating tool. That is a must have tool when good core is to be removed. The prep work thats involved to get the new glass to adhere to the hull has to be the worst part of the job. It has to be done though.

Transom time! I used two pieces of extrerior grade 3/4 plywood for the transom with a good layer of 1.5oz mat in the middle. I used the same to adhere the wood to the outer skin. clamped it for the day and let it cure.

So, I'm using 1/2" exterior grade plywood for the stringer setup in this hull. It will consist of 2 main center stringers on the outside edges of the pad and two more with knees in the next strake where the floor used to be. My floor will be much wider and more supportive because this will be a family boat. The floor is rough cut for now. The next step is to make a bulkhead up front on top of the floor and add a raised floor for mounting of the subwoofer and battery.

Trying to find a good seating postion. The steering will need moved more towards the center from its original spot.

Dang! I like it that stringer set up. I almost went with something like that on my Vulture but the whole core idea won.

Cant wait to see more pics.
