Yes the inside walls of the sponsons were thin and flexed. I cored all three sides of the sponsons..
That’s why they used foam.
I’ve seen guys add bulkheads to stiffen the sponsons but you are creating stiff points which aren’t good.
There’s an active thread on core bond putty vs fiberglass diy putty. Check it out.

When I pulled the floor up the fiberglass over the port sponson had delaminated near the transom . When I press on it it seems water like a wet sponge.
Did you also core the sides of the sponson or just the bottom? Did you frame the sponson to strengthen it or does the core take care of that?
Thank You for your advice.

Mike,
What signs did you see to make you think your sponsons are waterlogged?

I’ll get Phil on this thread, he has a Valero also.
One thing I noticed on my Virage. The inside walls of my sponsons were thin and the foam was an easy way to stiffen them.
Without the foam, coring was my best option.

Thank You very much for responding. I will definitely check out your article and probably have some questions. I am putting this build on hold for now until work slows down a little.

Hi Mike
The hydrostream.org site is hosted by this site and has some good articles under feature topics. I wrote a re-core article and explained in great detail with lots of pictures. I also showed the equipment and materials used. Hope this helps. This is on a Viper.

Additionally, I just finished building a Virage with the XT hull. I bought the hull bare with no foam in the sponsons. I cored my sponsons and didn't put foam in.
Feel free to ask questions.

The Valero's hull is the same as the VKing (just the deck is different).
So any Valero YT / VKing YT restoration threads on here might help.

eg:
http://www.hydrostreamforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2774
(although, this guy used transom compound as "core". Not sure how that's gonna hold up...)

One main problem you may run into here, and on other forums, is that a lot of threads had images hosted on Photobucket...and those images no longer work because PB are money-hungry extortionists.
