I think you're underestimating the cost of materials; or just how much you'll actually need.
Unless the boat came with everything you need to redo the structure...glass, core, marine plywood, resins/catalyst etc.....or you can get it for free or deeply discounted.....
Based on prices at Express Composites / Menards / Jamestown Distributors:
A 2'x4' sheet of balsa is $25. You'll need probably a minimum of 8 sheets. $200.
Marine-grade plywood 3/4"x4'x8'...$70 a sheet, you'll need 2 sheets minimum (1 for your transom, 1 for stringers.) Unless you want a floor, thats another sheet. $140
5-gal pail of resin is around $150. 5 gallons isn't enough.
1.5oz CSM fiberglass $5 per yard in 50" width.
18oz woven roving in 38" width is $5 per yard.
1708/1808 glass is $10 per yard in 50" width.
I didn't include vacuum-bagging materials. But you'll need quite a bit of that too.
Lastly, you'll need to paint or gelcoat the interior to protect the resin and stringers. Resin itself isn't waterproof. If it was, wood would never rot.
Prices are obviously higher in Canada where I live, but I roughed out the cost to completely redo my Viper's core/stringers/transom/floor and I was at $1400. And even then I think i was lowballing it.
