Because we currently do not allow uploading of avatars to our servers you will need to use an image hosting site such as Photobucket.com or any other site that allows images. I would suggest photobucket as they have excellent image editing tools built right into the site to make this super easy.
1. First you will need an image no bigger than 120x120 pixels.
2. Next you will need to upload that image to site such as photobucket, tinypic or the site of your choice.
3. Next copy the direct image URL as shown below.

4. Now go to your User Control Panel and select Profile>Edit Avatar as shown below.
First click on User Control Panel
Then select 'Profile' from the drop down menu
Then select 'Edit Avatar' from the next drop down menu.
Next past the URL from you image in the box (1) then click 'Submit' (2) and thats all there is to it.
